Question
What is musannaf ibn abi shayba?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
The Musannaf of ibn Abi Shaybah is one of the well-known compilations of Hadeeth and narrations about the righteous predecessors, in which Ibn Abi Shaybah compiled many Ahaadeeth according to subject, and narrated reports from the predecessors about that subject, regardless of the authenticity of those Ahaadeeth and reports.
Therefore, it includes Ahaadeeth classified as Saheeh (sound), Marfoo‘ (attributed to the Prophet), Mawqoof (attributed to the Companions), and Maqtoo‘ (with discontinuity in chain of transmission).
Ibn Abi Shaybah may Allah be pleased with him, is one of the great Hadeeth scholars from among the righteous predecessors. Ath-Thahabi described him as follows:
“He is the unmatched master of Hadeeth scholars, the trustworthy, the brilliant ‘Abdullah Muhammad ibn Abi Shaybah; the author of the Musnad (book where Hadeeths are arranged alphabetically under the names of the Companions on whose authority these Ahaadeeth were reported) and the Musannaf and other works.
He was one of the scholars at whose hands Imam Al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Daawood, and Ibn Maajah studied.”
