Denominations in Islam versus Christianity

If one was to ask the question what’s the difference regarding denominations between Christianity and Islam because Islam also has Sunni, Shia, Salafi, Sufi etc. I would argue that there is a qualitative and quantitative difference when it comes to this issue, and I’ll tell you precisely why. I’ll tell you exactly why.

If a Calvinist Christian walks into a Roman Catholic church, he’ll have no idea what’s going on. If a Roman Catholic walks into Russian Orthodox church, he may as well walk into the temple of another religion because he has no idea what’s going on.

If that Russian Orthodox Christian walks into a Chinese Baptist or a Korean Presbyterian Church, they have no idea what’s going.

In the case of Islām, the amount of uniformity when it comes to our ritual worship, when it comes to our liturgical worship, it is unheard of when it comes to the religion on the scale of Islam. Praise to Allah. We’re talking about 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide.

So, I can walk into any mosque, in any culture, pretty much let’s say 99.9 mosques I can walk into, and I know exactly, precisely what they’re doing, what they’re praying, what they’re reciting and how I join in the worship with them.

So, this is one important difference to keep in mind that yes, we Muslims do have Sunni, Shia this and that but at the end of the day we are not arguing whether is Muhammad the son of God or is he just a human being or a Prophet.

We Muslims are not having that kind of debate or disagreement. We might be arguing over the length of the beard, or do you put your hands up here when you pray or do you put them slightly down when you pray but we’re not arguing over the fact that you must pray five times a day by standing, prostrating, reciting the same one Qur’an that we all agree on.

So, keep that at the back of your mind that it’s not the same kind of mess. We didn’t mess it up in the same way that Christians messed up Christianity.
