Which Islamic methodology is the pure correct way that follows the Footsteps of Prophet Muhammed?

Question:

If Islam is a true religion, why are there sects amongst Muslims and which is the right one?

Answer:

Islam is based upon the Qur’an and authentic Ahadith in accordance with the understanding of the salaf (pious predecessors). The Qur’an enjoins unity among the Muslims as well as the ahadith and this unity is towards holding fast to the Qur’an and sunnah of prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as Allah says:

“… And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.” Q4:59

Allah again says in Al-Imran: 103

“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.”

The prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said:

“Hold firm to my sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly guided successors; bite it with your molar teeth”.

Malik Ibn Anas said:

“The sunnah is like the ark of Noah; whoever enters it is safe and whoever refuses to enter is destroyed”.

The unity is holding fast to the Qur’an and sunnah.

The Qur’an warns the Muslims of division as Allah says in Surah Al-Imran: 105

“And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment.”

There is no division in the Qur’an and no division in the Hadith. The prophet Mohammad (pbuh) being a prophet of truth, foretold us and for-warned us of the division among Muslims due to their personal ideology and misunderstanding of the true text of the Qur’an and authentic ahadith.

The prophet (pbuh) said” This nation (Muslim nation) will split in to seventy-three groups, seventy-two will be in the fire and one in Paradise. They are the al-jama’ah (Ahlus Sunnah -those who hold fast to the Qur’an and Sunnah).

Sahih suman Abi Dawud by Al-Albani.

He (pbuh) also said: “I urge you to adhere to the Jama’ah and beware of division, for the shaytan is with one and is further away from two. Whoever wants to be in the center of paradise, let him adhere to the Jama’ah.

Imam Ahmad in his Musnad; Classed as sahih by Albani in as-sunnah by Ibn Abi Asim.

The great Sahābī=companion of the Prophet Abdullah ibn Mas’ood said “The Jama’ah is that which is in accordance with the truth even if you are alone”.

The fact is that the Muslims are divided into different sects, based on their personal ideology, philosophical thoughts, desires and self-affiliated doctrine.

Alhamdulillah, the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) prophesied about it, warned the Muslims of it and gave the solution as to the right one in matter of Creed and belief.

During the time of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh), there were no division and sects among the Muslims and by then, they were simply called Muslims. Nowadays, there are many sects all claiming to be right and by simply saying you are a Muslim and remain quiet, then there will be no difference between you and the one who says he is a Muslim yet his islam is not based on the Islam (in terms of belief and Creed) that the prophet and his companions practiced. So, there must be a creed appellation to differentiate the true Muslims from all the strayed sects.

Many Muslims always ignore the truth of speaking of the reality of sects among Muslims but before talking of the saved group, let me reiterate that there is no sect in Islam as a religion, but sects do exist among Muslims due to their personal inclinations.

Islam being based upon the Qur’an and Sunnah on the understanding of the pious predecessors as was practiced and commanded by the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) all of these sects either formulate, reject, misinterpret, or add certain things to their matter of Creed and belief except one which is the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah; which refers to the path followed by the prophet and his companions in terms of knowledge, beliefs, words, deeds and what they approved of.

Among these sects except Ahlus sunnah, some have rejected some of the attributes of Allah, some misinterpret the attributes of Allah, some reject the ahadith, some reject some of the companions of prophet Muhammad (pbuh), some reject and misinterpret some Qur’anic verses, some introduces new things into Islam (like celebrating the Prophet’s birthday, salat-ul Fatihah, etc.).

Some have their “shaykho” they consider greater than prophet Muhammad (pbuh), some consider Ali Ibn Abi Talib as their prophet, some consider some prohibited things in Islam to be lawful, etc. and all constitute a different creed and belief contrary to what prophet Muhammad (pbuh) taught.

Except the Ahlus sunnah, who accept everything the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) taught without adding or subtracting or giving a different meaning to it contrary to how the companions understood it as Allah says in Surah Al-Ma’idah: 3

“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.” The Ahlus sunnah believe everything pertaining to Islam is correct before prophet Muhammad (pbuh) departed from this world.

Surah Al-Hashr: 7

“And whatever the Messenger has given you – take; and what he has forbidden you – refrain from.”

The evidence that Ahlus Sunnah are the safe and correct followers/Muslims is the Hadith the prophet Muhammad pbuh is reported to have said:

“Whoever among you lives after I die will see many differences. I urge you to adhere to my Sunnah and the way of the rightly-guided caliphs”.

The prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “Whoever turns away from my sunnah (my way, my teachings, my creed, etc) is not of me” [Sahih al-Bukhari, 8]

The ahlus Sunnah are the followers of the the Sunnah backed by Allah in the Qur’an Surah Al-Ahzaab : 21

“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.” as well as Qur’an 59:7.

Holding fast to the Sunnah (methodology and lifestyle of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in beliefs, words, actions and deeds etc) is incumbent upon every Muslim and that’s the call of Allah.

To the other perverted sects, many are Muslims but whose Creed is not based on the creed taught by the prophet and Allah says concerning them.

Allah says in Qur’an Surah Al-Imran: 105

“And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment.”

Qur’an Surah An-Nisa: 115

“And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers – We will give him what he has taken and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination.”

Allah says in Qur’an Surah An-Nisa: 69

“And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger – those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.”
