The State Of Death | How Is Soul Taken?

The State Of Death | How Is Soul Taken?

“Every soul shall have the taste of death”. (Al Quran 3:185)

Life is a journey from Allah to Allah! Quran states
In the end to Us shall you be brought back. (29:57)

The subject of death scares us because we don’t know much about it nor the life in the grave and the life after death. We all know we will one day die but few are willing to discuss the details of what happens thereafter. We are afraid because of our own ignorance; because what is to come is unseen and unfamiliar…and we are unprepared.

Say: “The Angel of Death, put in charge of you, will (duly) take your souls: then shall you be brought back to your Lord. (32:11)

Nobody can escape death. Allah says in Quran
Wherever you are, death will find you out, even if you are towers built up strong and high. (4:78)

As far as the removal of the soul from the flesh is concerned, the Angel of Death will extract it from good people with ease. For those who are bad, the removal of the soul is tough and difficult. The Qur’anic expression for the removal of the soul from hypocrites and disbelievers is horrifying: More than one angel are to work together. They beat the face and back of the deceased while extracting the soul, otherwise, it will come out with difficulty. Allah says in Surah Al-Anfal (The Spoils of War) the following:

If you could see, when the angels take the souls of the unbelievers (at death), how they smite their faces and their backs, saying: taste the penalty of the blazing fire. Because of the deeds which your own hands sent forth: For God is never unjust to his servants. (8:50-51)

The state of death for a believer and Non-beleiver is mention in Surah Waqiah 56:82-93

“And instead (of thanking Allah) for the provision He gives you, on the contrary, you deny Him (by disbelief)!
Then why do you not (intervene) when (the soul of a dying person) reaches the throat?
And you at the moment are looking on,
But We (i.e. Our angels who take the soul) are nearer to him than you, but you see not, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol.27, Page 209]
Then why do you not, if you are exempt from the reckoning and recompense (punishment, etc.)
Bring back the soul (to its body), if you are truthful?
Then, if he (the dying person) be of the Muqarrabun (those brought near to Allah),
(There is for him) rest and provision, and a Garden of delights (Paradise).
And if he (the dying person) be of those on the Right Hand,
Then there is safety and peace (from the Punishment of Allah) for (you as you are from) those on the Right Hand.
But if he (the dying person) be of the denying (of the Resurrection), the erring (away from the Right Path of Islamic Monotheism),
Then for him is entertainment with boiling water.”

The believer is given glad tidings Paradise when he reaches death
“Verily, those who say: “Our Lord is Allaah (Alone),” and then they stand firm, on them the angels will descend (at the time of their death) (saying): “Fear not, nor grieve! But receive the glad tidings of Paradise which you have been promised!”
[Fussilat 41:30]

For the Non believer the state of death is stated in Surah Al Anfal
“And if you could see when the angels take away the souls of those who disbelieve (at death); they smite their faces and their backs, (saying): “Taste the punishment of the blazing Fire” [al-Anfaal 8:50]

The situation of those who commit acts of disobedience and major sins, at the time of death, varies according to their level of disobedience and obedience. For the person who is one of those who affirm Tawheed and are good and righteous, they will have the glad tidings and good situation that Allah has promised here, and that the one who mixed good deeds with bad deeds will find himself in a mixed situation, so he will be deprived of the glad tidings and good situation and merciful treatment by the angels, according to his situation and deeds.
